The proposed Hamelin Jewish Cultural Center, to be built on the site of the original Hamelin Synagogue, destroyed on Pogrommnacht, will serve the Reform Jewish Community of Hamelin (Jüdische Gemeinde Hameln, JGH). JGH was founded in 1997 by Rachel Dohme and a small group of Russian immigrants. This is the first organized Jewish community to be established in Hamelin since World War II, and the proposed synagogue will be the first Reform synagogue built in Germany since the war. The project will feature a multi-use sanctuary, a museum, a gift shop, a café and housing for visiting scholars. |
