The High Holiday and Sukkot services to be led by Cantor Francois Lilienfeld

We wish all our members and friends Leshana Tovah Tikatevu!
We're pleased to have Cantor Lilienfeld and his wife, Petra with us again for the Fall holidays. Sukkoth will be extra special this year! We will be building our Sukka on our land: "Synagogue Place #1". Plan to get there early and help decorate! This Sukka will be historic! This will be the 1st time since the synagogue was destroyed in November 1938 that a Sukka has been erected on that soil. We are inviting all the churches and interested citizens to join us for this festive holiday!

News and Information

New Room
We've moved to our new rooms and although they're much smaller, they're cozy. We thank everyone who helped with the move, especially Aron Kaplan. Hopefully, the synagogue will be built soon and we'll have more room. Everyone can help this dream become a reality.

Our Land-Synagogue Place # 1
We plan to erect a fence around our land and begin working on landscaping.
At a membership meeting on August 11, we voted to establish a foundation. The foundation — Hameln Liberal Synagogue Foundation — will legally insure that our synagogue is and stays a liberal synagogue. This is one more step forward in our future. Thanks to Katarina Seidler for spending the day with us and answering all our questions.
The brochure “A Synagogue for Hameln” is printed and will soon be part of our local fundraising efforts. Together with the Jewish Appleseed Foundation, we hope to raise the money needed to raise the roof! Please help by contributing through our secure server online!

Holidays
Eva Schkolnykova has agreed to take over the kitchen committee as long as Faina Engler is indisposed.

Rabbinical Support
The European Region and the Friends of Progressive Judaism in Europe will be assisting us in making it possible that Rabbi Irit Shillor continue her monthly visits to us. In addition, we plan to have Abraham Geiger rabbinical student Alina Traiger with us once a month.

New Siddurim
Thanks to Rabbi Irit Shillor for our wonderful, new tri-lingual Siddurim. Now everyone can join in — whether in Hebrew, German, or Russian!

movement in Arnoldshain, Germany

Union For Progressive Judaism in Germany
The UPJ has been able to hire a General Secretary, thanks to the American Friends of the UPJ. Shmuel Bahagon comes to us from Israel where he has been active in the WUPJ for many years. He begins September 1 and has his office in Berlin. We look forward to working with him and wish him good luck with this challenging work.
The UPJ elected a new Board during the June annual conference. President: Dr. Jan Muehlstein, Political Chair: Katarina Seidler, Foreign Contact Chair: Rachel Dohme, Youth Education Chair: Ingrid Wettberg, Religious Chair: Deborah Tal-Ruettger, Legal Chair: Jonathan Vanghel, and Integration Chair: Margarita Souslovitsch.
The UPJ has added a new congregation — Bad Segeberg. Welcome!
During the annual conference, Rachel Dohme presented Rabbi Uri Regev, WUPJ Executive Director, with a sculpture — a piece of charred brick from the destroyed Hameln synagogue, symbolizing what we in Germany are doing to re-establish Progressive Judaism upon the destruction of the past — L’ Dor V’ Dor.

Todah Rabah . . . . . . Thank You
  • We thank Mr. Heinz Fischer for his tireless efforts to have a Swastika removed from a house in Hameln.
  • We thank Mr. Bernhard Priesmeier for spontaneously organizing an anti-Nazi rally in Rinteln. Rachel Dohme spoke at the rally, which was huge success.
  • We thank our member, Josif Pelts (and Hartmut Bomhoff and Dan Alter) for a fantastic trip to “Jewish Berlin”.

Tree Of Life
Our tree survived the transplant to our new rooms. Now,it needs more leaves! Leaves cost 50 Euros and can be ordered online. The money goes to our synagogue building fund. Leaves are hanging from the Rubanov Family, Mrs. Lerch, Mrs. Sinizina, and the Dohme Family.

Synagogue Building Fund
Dr. O. Rubanov made a contribution in memory of his beloved father. Rachel Dohme contributed honorarium from lectures to the German Women's Club and the Lutheran Church in Meinsen.

New Members
We welcome new members Regina Brodetskaya, Ninel Taranushvili, and her husband Vladimir Legkov.

Freundeskreis
We welcome new members Heinz Fischer and Uwe Wolandovitsch.

Mazel Tov
  • Mazel Tov to the Lokchina family on the birth of their daughter, Olga.
  • Mazel Tov to Rabbis Irit Shillor and Dr. Robert Ash on their Smicha.

Sympathy
We send condolences to the Hinz family on the loss of their son, rabbinical student Andreas Jonathan Hinz [who was murdered on date, location, circumstances]. We mourn the loss of a dear friend and respected future rabbi. We are shocked and outraged at this senseless and brutal murder. The violence of this evil act cannot be comprehended.
Andy had blossomed in the rabbinate and would have been the kind of spiritual leader our movement so needs. The congregations he served, the children he taught in our communities and Machenot, the young adults he led in “Young and Jewish”, the public lectures he gave — all feel the loss of this sensitive, bright, caring and dedicated young leader. There was essentially no aspect of our movement that he was not involved in or dedicated to.
Our loss cannot be measured. We vow to continue the work Andy so loved. He will never be forgotten. He will remain in our hearts and part of our collected energy.
