Rabbi Irit Shillor

Dear members, friends and supporters,
This past month of February was busy and filled with many activities. Our annual membership meeting was well attended as were services with Rabbi Shillor and our new music class with Alina Treyher. Each and every member is important to a vital community and it is important that our activities are attended by as many members as possible. YOU make the congregation!

Annual Membership Meeting
Our annual membership meeting was held on February 9, 2003. The official business was seasoned with lively and pertinent discussions. Elections were held and the board is composed of: President: Rachel Dohme, Vice President: Polina Pelts, Treasurer: Matvey Dvortsis, Cultural Chair: Valerij Fridman, Ritual Chair: Aron Kaplan.
A report from the “Synagogue Task Force” was delivered by Mr. Spangenberger, who made the point that each member must see the synagogue project as their own and become involved. The Task Force is trying to raise prize money for an Architect Competition for our building and has begun to work with a professional fundraiser. Membership dues should be paid as soon as possible. Don't put it off!

Synagogue Project
The synagogue building Task Force has been meeting since last fall. Members are our congregational President, Rachel Dohme, Catholic Deacon, Hans_Georg Spangenberger, former Hameln mayor, Christa Bruns , Mr. Werner Stapp, Mr. Gerd Scheunpflug and Mr. Zahl. The work of the task force is to design a concept for the building and a fundraising plan. The congregation is grateful for the support!

Treaty between the German Government
and the Central Council of Jews of Germany

The treaty (“Staatsvertrag”), awarding the Central Council 3 million Euros annually, was signed between Central Council President, Paul Spiegel and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on January 27, 2003. To become law, it must be ratified by the Parliament.
While we applaud the German government we also demand that ALL Jewish congregations be included in this treaty-whether they are members of the Central Council or not! At the present time, none of our Progressive congregations are Central Council members. Our State board of 7 Progressive congregations has applied for membership. It remains to be seen if our membership application is accepted and how if treaty will include non-member congregations as the money is being awarded “for all Jews living in Germany”.

Music Seminar
Abraham Geiger rabbinical student, Alina Treyher visits our congregation once a month. We've decided to use Alina's special musical talents on Shabbat morning. She will lead a monthly music seminar, teaching interested members the liturgy and allowing us to “feel more at home” with our services. Please join us!

Kehilla with Inna
We've begun a Kehilla ( group) for our littlest members — children between 4 and 8 years old. Inna Golbereg, Madrich (counsellor) from our Machenot (camps) will lead the group. Meetings are each 1st and 3rd Monday in the month. Inna will create a playful, learning Jewish atmosphere with songs, arts and crafts dancing. Moms and grandmothers join in to make it a family experience!

Passover
Let's get ready! Matzah is available at the congregation office for $4.75 a kilo. Mark your calendars now for our congregational Seder on April 10 at 4:00 p.m. Alina Treyher will lead the Seder.
