Dear Members and Friends,
May brings big changes in our congregation. By the end of the month our newly renovated rooms will be ready and we will dedicate them with Shavuoth services and the induction of our Rabbi Shillor. We look forward to each and every member helping us to make our new home a welcoming spiritual abode until our new synagogue is built.
Pesach Seder
Our congregational Seder was an amazing evening! Thanks to the many who made it so. We especially thank the ladies of the kitchen: Feana Engler, Eva Schkolnykova, Irina Grach, Elena Micheeva, Elena Gorbatschova and Larissa Dvortsis. We all know how much work and love went into all the preparations. A special thanks to rabbinical student Alina Treyher for leading the Seder. We're also pleased to report that all our Matza was sold to community members.
Society for Christians and Jews
The Society held elections last month and the new board promises more of the good work of the past! Our president, Rachel Dohme, was re-elected as Jewish board member as were Christa Bruns and Hans-Georg Spangenberger as Lutheran and Catholic board members. Bernd Gelderblom was re-elected as business manager and Heinz Engelhardt as treasurer. Our congregation looks forward to continued cooperation with the Society.
Israeli Cultural Festival
Our congregation is part of the state-wide cultural festival of Israeli culture. We will be hosting a beautiful photography exhibit from Israeli artist, Shai Ginott. Her works will be on display from May 10–22 in the foyer of Hameln’s city courthouse. The opening will feature Alina Treyher in concert and will be held on Saturday morning, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. We are pleased that the Society for Christians and Jews, the city office of culture, and Hameln Piano House are partners with us in presenting this exhibit to our city! The exhibition is free — contributions for the synagogue building fund will be very welcome.
Dieter’s Giur
Friday night services on May 23 will be a very special evening! Our Dieter Vogelhuber will be officially welcomed into our congregation and be honored by Rabbi Shillor with a special aliya. Dieter has been active in our congregational life since we first met him, helping out in every way. What a pleasure it will be to receive him as a full member after his Giur! After services, Dieter invites everyone to a festive Kiddush!
Summer Camp
The Union of Progressive Jews of Germany offers summer camp this year for youth from 8–18. Adi Waichselbaum returns as head counselor, supported by youth he has trained during the year. In addition, Netzer Olami and Abraham Geiger students will help out. The cost is 300 Euros for the 11 days of Jewish learning, sport and fun. Registration forms are in our office.
Ninth annual Conference of the Union of Progressive Jews of Germany
The ninth annual conference of the Union for Progressive Jews of Germany will be held in Berlin from July 10–13. In addition to the annual meeting, we will join with WUPJ leaders to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the WUPJ. Conference languages are German, Russian and English. Registration forms are in our office.
Special Date
Mark your calendar! Our congregation has a very special evening planned on June 6! We will celebrate Shavuoth with a service led by Rabbi Irit Shillor. Joining our congregation for the service will be the former Jewish residents of Hameln, their host families and local dignitaries. Our new rooms will be dedicated and our rabbi, Irit Shillor, will be inducted. Honoring us with their presence will be Rabbi Friedlander (invited), Dr. Leo Hepner, Chairman of the European Region of the WUPJ, and Mr. And Mrs. Teacher, Friends of Progressive Judaism in Europe. Refreshments will follow the service. It'll be quite an evening!
