September 2003  •  Elul–Tishri 5763–5764
 PROGRAM

Dear members and friends,
Summer was warm and beautiful and we reflect on many pleasant moments with family, friends and congregational activities. Nature has a change in store for us and as Fall approaches, we ready ourselves, as Jews, to greet the New Year. Through prayer, song and meditation we will review the past year and look into our hearts, taking emotional inventory, preparing ourselves to begin the new year with pure hearts and souls.
We wish everyone L’SHANA TOVAH TIKATEVU for 5764. May we all be inscribed for a good year!

Annual Conference of the Union of Progressive Jews of Germany
Our annual conference was held in Berlin and hosted the largest number of participants ever. Attendees came not only from Germany but from our mother organization (WUPJ) in Israel, from England and the United States. The conference opened with a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the 1st World Union conference. In 1928, the World Union held it's first meeting in Berlin. Speakers were, among others, Executive Director of the WUPJ, Rabbi Uri Regev and Minister of the Interior, Otto Schily. During an emotional candle lighting ceremony, our own Polina Pelts was honored as she lit a candle for the 6 million and as a representative of the new face of German Jewry, the Russian émigrés. Conference-goers enjoyed an exciting 4 days of workshops, seminars and worship services and look forward to next year's conference to be held in Berlin from July 15–18. At the annual membership meeting, the Reform Congregation Pinneberg was admitted to the UPJ. Our national movement is expanding!

Our Congregation to be featured on TV
German TV, NDR, visited our congregation, filming part of our Friday night service, interviewing our Rabbi Shillor and other congregants for a feature to be aired this coming Spring on the series, “German Storybook”. Especially highlighted are our plans to build the first Reform synagogue in post-war Germany. Exact airing date to be announced.

High Holy Days Seminar
Our congregation is pleased to announce a seminar with the renowned cantor from Riga, Jakow Zelewitsch on Sunday, September 14th from 10:00 a.m. till ca. 1:00 p.m. The Cantor will discuss the history and meaning of the liturgy and offer an opportunity to learn the holiday melodies. Seminar language will be Russian. Refreshments will be served. There is no cost to our members for the seminar. See you there!
