Dear members, friends, and supporters,
Once again, we wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year! L’Shana Tovah Tikatevu may we all be inscribed for a good year! May 5764 be a year of peace for Israel and the entire world.
September was a busy month in our congregation. Most important were the beautiful Rosh Hashanah services led by rabbinical student Alina Treiger. We wish Alina the best of luck in her new congregation. Cantor Jakow Zelewitsch led an excellent seminar in Russian about the High Holy Days, making them even more meaningful for our congregants. Hopefully he’ll visit us again soon.
A completely different meeting was held when State Board president Katarina Seidler and State Board social worker Margarita Souslovitch spoke about social issues. Local high school art students met with us and began work on their project to design and build models of our future synagogue. (See the latest article of September 20 in In the News.) Ms. Anne Worst from German TV visited us again to finish filming her piece about our congregation, to be broadcast November 9th at 9:00 A.M. on NDR TV station.
In October we just keep on going
Information Meeting on September 8
State Board president Katarina Seidler and State Board social worker Margarita Souslovitch held an information meeting in our community center about social issues of concern to our members. Their presentation was followed by questions and answers.
JGH in the Newspapers
We’re blessed to have such interested local press and enjoy much positive attention in Hameln. A wonderful article about our congregation was also written in the Jewish Newspaper a weekly published in Russian for Russian Jews living in Germany.
Seminar High Holy Days
On September 14, Cantor Jakow Zelewitsch (Riga) held a fascinating seminar in Russian for our members. The time flew and we learned many new and interesting things and enjoyed listening to the Cantor’s lovely voice while we practiced High Holy Day music with him. We hope to invite Cantor Zelewitsch again soon.
New Rabbinical Student
Beginning in October we will receive monthly visits from Abraham Geiger College rabbinical student, Yuri Kadnikov. Yuri was born in Yevpatoriya, Ukraine. He is married and has one child. From 1999 to 2001, Yuri worked as youth director in his home Reform congregation in Yevpatoriya. In 2001 he began as community worker in the Reform congregation of Sevastopol. He then attended the WUPJ’s Machon in Moscow for 2 years before beginning his rabbinical studies in Potsdam at AGC. We’re delighted to have this spiritual young man working with us. Yuri first service will be on Friday, October 3. He will also lead Yom Kippur serices. Please join us in making him feel welcome!
News from the Task Force:
A Synagogue for Hameln
The Task Force: A Synagogue for Hameln has sent out it’s first mailing and has had an initial positive response. Our local parlamentarians Ms. Schulte and Ms. Loesekrug-Moeller are also very involved and are looking for ways to support our plans.
Second Sukkoth Celebration
on Our Land
Last year we erected the first Sukka in 64 years on the land where the Hameln Synagogue stood until it’s destruction in 1938. This year we’ll continue the tradition. Join us for a day of Sukkoth fun. Meet us at the synagogue and bake Challot at 2 p.m. At 4 p.m. we’ll go to our land and build and decorate the Sukka and at 5 p.m. celebrate with Erew Sukkot sevices. Ms. Worst and her TV team will capture it all on film!
Exciting Day for our Congregation
We’re expecting many visitors in our community center on Thursday, October 9. Mr. Noach Kleiger, senior journalist for the largest Israeli daily newspaper, Yedioth Achronot is traveling through Germany on the invitation of the German government. In cooperation with the Goethe Institute, Mr. Kleiger will visit our congregation. Congregation president Rachel Dohme will speak about Jewish Life in Hameln Today. Hameln’s local newspaper will cover the story. Other discussion points will be the Reform movement in Germany and our plans to build the first Reform synagogue in post-war Germany. Ms. Worst and her TV team will be on hand as well as Ms. Vivien Moeksis from Lower Saxony’s Ministry of the Interior. We hope to see many congregants there!
Weekend in Berlin
Parlamentarian Ms. Brigitte Schulte has invited a young adult from our congregation to take part in a special weekend in Berlin. Topic of the inter-religious weekend for young people from all over the country will be Beliefs and Values. German Parlament President, Mr. Wolfgang Thierse has initiated the weekend. Inna Golbereg has been selected in recognition of her work teaching our littlest ones and for her work as Madricha in the UPJ summer and winter Machenot. Mazel Tov Inna! Have a great trip!
Todah Rabah Thank You

- Thanks to the Task Force: A Synagogue for Hameln for helping us clean up our land and readying it for the winter.
Contributions
Thanks to our many good-willed members, friends and supporters! Instead of birthday gifts on his big four-0, Mr. C. Schmidt collected money for our synagogue. Visitors to the House of Religion made contributions after a Havdalla service, led by R. Dohme. Thanks go out to Mark Schwartz, Rabbi Jo David and the Ziv Foundation for monies contributed and earmarked for our congregation’s social worker next year.
We thank the many contributors: Dieter Vogelhuber, Ute Gibas, John Smith, Mr. Baum, Mr. Smailus, Mr. Späth, Cantor Zelewitsch, Dr. Kasting, the Lutheran Reformed Church and Mr. Rakhmanov, the companies, Lomapharm, Neudorf, First Travel, Emmentaler AB,Weser Champignon, Volksbank and Dr. Paul Lohmann.
Mark Schwartz’s Campaign

Ms. Pelts has been subsidized by the employment office for the last 5 years but that subsidy is over as of January 15, 2004. The congregation doesn’t have the funds to pay her. Ms. Pelts’ work in the community is essential! Anyone caring to make a donation should contact Mark at markhschwartz@yahoo.com
May you be blessed for your generosity.
