Dear members, friends and supporters,
It was wonderful celebrating Hanukka together. We want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the evening so special — especially the children. The New Year is here and we wish everyone a happy and healthy 2004! We look forward to our 7th congregational year with high hopes for the future.
Our office will be closed between December 22 and January 9, reopening on Monday, the 12th. During that time, Board members will be available on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:00. In emergencies, please call a Board member at home. All scheduled activities will take place.
Please note! As of January 12 our new office hours are:
- Mondays and Thursdays: out-of-office appointments 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
- Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Rabbi Shillor
Rabbi Shillor will lead Friday evening services on January 9. At her last service, there was hardly a free seat in the sanctuary. We look forward to seeing you all again! It’s always a pleasure to kibbitz with friends after the service and enjoy the Oneg together.
On Wednesday, the 14th of January, Rabbi Shillor will be with us for the entire day. Mark your calendars for her “Rabbi’s Table” at 11:00 a.m., where any and every question leads to a stimulating discussion. Individual appointments can be made for the afternoon.
Coffee
After the success of our first “Coffee Party” on December 8, we look forward to January’s get-together. Many different issues and concerns were heard, all with the good of the congregation in mind. It was a constructive afternoon in which we listened to each other, discussed objectively with respect and tolerance, and searched for solutions to our problems together. We’ve already implemented many of the new ideas and suggestions. The following are some results from the meeting.
- Religion Class: Our religion teacher, Mr. Pesok invites all Russian-speaking members to his adult education class on Sunday, January 11 at 2:00 P.M. Take the time to join your friends for an exciting lesson about Judaism.
- Torah Study: Another idea was to study the Parascha together once a month. We’ll begin on Saturday morning, January 31, at 10:00 a.m. R. Dohme will lead the session as we look into “Bo”, Ex. 10,1–11,3.
- Congregational Librarian: Also at the meeting, Mr. J. Pelts offered to take over the community library. We all know about his love of books. Library hours will be Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00. Drop by and borrow a good read!
The next Coffee Party is on Monday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Movie Night
Thanks to Mr. V. Fridman, our movie night is a hit! The January film will be the classic Fiddler on the Roof. Who’s bringing the popcorn?
Nothing to do?
That’s never a problem at our community center! Our members offer many interesting classes:
- Yoga—led by E. Lebidinska
- German class—led by P. Pelts, D.Vogelhuber, and Mrs. Schlegel
- Dance class—led by B. Markhassev
- Art History—led by M. Olvovska and L. Chapiro
- Adult religion class—led by V. Pesok (Russian) and Rabbi Shillor (German)
- Movie night—led by V. Fridman
- Religious class for children—led by I. Golbereg
Flea Market
In order to raise money for our synagogue building fund, the congregation will hold a Flea Market on Sunday, January 18th from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Please bring clothing we can sell on Monday to Wednesday, January 12–15 during office hours. F. Pelts and C. Brueckner will receive the goods and organize the sale. All proceeds will go to our building fund! Bring all your friends and neighbors to our great sale!
Tu B’ Schvat Seminar
Abraham Geiger rabbinical student, Yuri Kadnykov will spend the weekend of January 23–25 with us. Besides Bnei Mitzvah lessons, leading Friday night and Saturday morning services, he will offer a seminar on Tu B’Schvat, “Ecology in Judaism”, on Sunday, January 25. The seminar will begin at 11:00 a.m. and be held in Russian. The congregational Tu B’Schvat Seder will be held on February 6 with Rabbi Shillor.
National Holocaust Remembrance Day
Our congregation will observe this national day of remembrance in cooperation with the city of Hameln and the Society for Christians and Jews. We will meet at 4:00 P.M. at the memorial in front of our land for a short service. The theme this year are the slave laborers. Our member, Mr. B. Markhassev will play Russian music as letters are read aloud. At 6:00 P.M. the observance will continue at the theater with a lecture.
Todah Rabah — Thank You
We wish to thank the county government for providing the financial support enabling us to continue the position of our congregational social worker, Mrs. F. Pelts. We also wish to thank the members of the task force “A Synagogue for Hameln” for their continued efforts to help us realize our dream of building the first Reform synagogue in post-war Germany.
