Dear members and friends,
Last month our congregation enjoyed many important and pleasant activities. Certainly the highlight was the visit of architect Arnold Oppler, great-grandson of Edwin Oppler. As many of you know, Edwin Opler built the Hameln Synagogue in 1879. We hope to be able to work with Arnold Oppler to build the first Reform synagogue in post-war Germany. We establish our connection with our past, carrying on the tradition that came before us and set a sign for our hope for the future. It is our vision that through our congregation Jewish life in Hameln has been re-established and that it has a future here.
Rabbi Shillor
Rabbi Shillor will be with us again on Friday, February 6, when we celebrate Tu B’Schvat together. Please plan to attend. In addition, Rabbi Shillor offers appointments, classes and a Rabbi’s Table, where the questions you ask decide the topic of discussion. We hope to see you there.
Kaffee Klatsch
At our last get-together we discussed among other topics the self-help initiative, Russian Pension. We thank L. Schapiro and A. Arnautova for their hard work. They’ve helped many others with their project. Our State Board president, Katarina Seidler was also in attendance. She encouraged us with our plans to build our synagogue. She reported of the ups and downs of such a venture and gave us courage to keep working toward our goal of our own 4 walls! We’ve decided to hold the next Kaffee Klatsch in the spring unless something urgent comes up.
TV Stars again
Ms. Lila Hess and her TV team from NDR filmed our community life last month. The film centered around our congregation and our plans to build a synagogue. We hope to have a copy of the film to show at our annual membership meeting.
Meeting in the Ministry for the Interior
Rachel Dohme and Katarina Seidler met with Minister assistant Mr. Hesse in Hannover last month. At a very friendly and productive meeting our president shared the congregation’s successes and concerns. We look forward to a continued positive working relationship with the Ministry.
Tu B’Shvat
New Year of the Trees or Tu B’Schvat is a very special holiday in Judaism. We plan to celebrate together with a Seder on Feb. 6th with Rabbi Shillor. With prayer and song we’ll drink from 4 glasses of wine and eat from the 15 types of fruits, nuts and grains that grow in Israel. Please plan to join us.
