“Build a synagogue for me!” says Anastasia.

Dear members, friends and supporters,
Our congregational life develops by leaps and bounds! We hosted the working visit of U.S. architect Arnold Oppler on January 28. During his one-week stay we got to know him and we discussed the possibility of his building our synagogue with us. Besides intensive study sessions at our site, Mr. Oppler met with the Task Force: A Synagogue for Hameln, met with Mr. Kaiser from the city building office, spoke with several local architects interested in our project, and met with local high school students who designed models of synagogues in a cooperative project between our congregation and the school. The Hameln and Hannover newspapers and the Lutheran Press Agency covered Mr. Oppler’s visit and our plans extensively. (See “In the News” on this Web site.) We hope to have a proposal from Mr. Oppler soon and as a congregation, decide if he’s to lead our project. Mr. Oppler is the great grandson of Edwin Oppler, the architect who built the Hameln synagogue in 1879. The historical significance of an Oppler family member rebuilding on the same ground where the synagogue stood is awesome.
The next step will be to take the plans and approach philanthropic institutions, organizations and private contributors. In the U.S., Rabbi Jo David, executive director of the Jewish Appleseed Foundation will be working with us to raise funds. Here at home, our congregation will undertake fundraising projects — the first of which will be a benefit concert on April 17 in Hameln. Another way to help is by ordering “leaves” for our “Tree of Life.” (See the “Tree of Life” on this Web site.)
“He who builds, stays.” With this promise of active Jewish life in Hameln, we look forward to a positive future for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.
Tax exempt contributions to the synagogue building fund can be made on this site through the Jewish Appleseed Foundation’s secure server at Network for Good. Click the New Synagogue button.

“Kaffee Klatch”

“Kaffee Klatch” — Members offer suggestions
to improve programing.

“Rabbi’s Table”
More and more members are joining us once a month for Rabbi Shillor’s “Rabbi’s Table”. In a relaxed atmosphere, questions can be asked and answers given. One question leads to another and everyone comes away richer for the experience. See you next time on April 7!

New Face
We are delighted to welcome Irith Raub-Michelsohn to our congregation. Ms. Raub-Michelsohn is the president of Bielefeld Jewish congregation and comes to us as support staff. She brings with her many years of experience, new impulses and creative ideas. With her boundless energy, she’ll be helping out in the office, working with the board and with the synagogue building task force. In addition, she will offer a lecture series entitled, “My rights as Jewish immigrant in Germany.” We look forward to working together and are confident that Ms. Raub-Michelsohn’s input will better our congregation.

Annual Memebership Meeting
Our annual membership meeting was held on February 22. Minutes are available for inspection in the office.

Pesach
Passover is still a while away but it’s never too soon to make plans. The congregation will be selling Israeli matza (3,50 Euro/ Kilo) from March 18 as long as the supply lasts. Mark your calendar — congregational Seder with Rabbi Shillor will be held on April 9 at 5:00 pm.

German class

German class for immigrants, taught by immigrants!

New Class offered
Although our congregation already offers an amazing variety of classes and activities, thanks to dedicated members (German class, yoga class, dance class, art history class, video club, Judaism class, Torah study group, religious class for children and youth) here’s something new! If interested, contact the office. Ms. Ovodkova offers a weekly art class for children and/or adults. If there is enough interest, time and place will be arranged.

Todah Rabah — Thank You
We wish to thank Rabbi Irit Shillor for the lovely Tu B’Schvat Seder held on February 6th. A special thanks to the kitchen team, Ms. Dvortsis, Gorbachova and Engler who prepared everything so beautifully. Thank you also to our Dieter Vogelhuber for his lecture on anti-semitism-a copy of his lecture is available in our library. We thank Bernd Gelderblom for his slide presentation of his visit to Krackau. We were particularly pleased to see so many faces from our “Freundeskreis” there and realize how important our community is in furthering positive Jewish-Christian relations. Grateful thanks go out to Mr. Sheldon Curtis for his translation work. The results can be seen on this site “In the News.”
