Dear members, friends and supporters,
October saw many different activities in our congregation. Simchat Torah was enjoyed with joyous prayer, flags and song.

Abraham Geiger rabbinical student Tom Kucera visited us for the first time and led Saturday morning services. We were delighted to share in our sister congregation in Bad Pyrmont as they celebrated their Torah dedication. A community outing to Höxter was fascinating and well organized. Let’s not forget our wonderful Sukkoth celebration on our land. The community celebrated the holiday publicly for the third time, and we were joined by over seventy townspeople, church representatives and political leaders. We thank Dr. Annette Böckler, Rachel and Rebekka Dohme for leading the services, the children for their decorations, and Rebecca Brückner and her Challa-baking team for a most memorable evening.

Demonstration
Our congregation took part in a public demonstration in Hameln on October 15. We protested against a conference of German soldiers who had been awarded the Iron Cross in WWII. Irith Raub-Michelsohn, executive secretary for the Union of Progressive Jews of Germany spoke. A public meeting will be held on November 18 to discuss this further.

Outing
Over thirty members of our congregation and Bad Pyrmont visited the town of Höxter on invitation of our “Friends” member A.Späth. After visiting the Jewish cemetery and memorial, we were received at the Coptic Monastery. We thank Bishop Damian for the fascinating visit, delicious meal and Dieter for the organization.

Rabbinical Student
Rabbinical student Tom Kucera will visit our congregation again on Friday, November 5. He’ll teach the B’nei Mitzvah class and lead Friday night services. We welcome him!

Ninth of November
Our congregation, in cooperation with the city of Hameln and the Society of Christians and Jews, will take part in a memorial service on our land on November 9 at 4 p.m. This day commemorates the destruction of Germany’s synagogues in 1938. Rebekka Dohme will lead the religious service. At 5 p.m. we will meet at our congregation to hear from Josef Speckmann, an eyewitness. He will share his memories of life in Hameln under Nazi rule and the secret burial of the beloved Hameln doctor, Sigmund Kratzenstein.

Concert
     G. Kaplun and M. Rabowski will give a concert in our community center on November 11. Tickets are 2€. Join us for a musical hour sure to warm the heart.

Tours
Our congregation is becoming more and more well-known. We receive requests regularly from school, church and civic groups who desire to see our sanctuary and who wish to learn first-hand about Judaism. We welcome these groups and believe that this type of PR work is essential. Three tours have been booked in November. In addition, R. Dohme will teach a class on Judaism at the city’s hospital for their staff.

Winter Camp
Children between the ages of 12 and 17 are invited to join UPJ Youth leader Adi Weichselbaum for a winter camp in Mühlenberg. Dates are December 23–30. Join in for a week of Jewish learning and fun and see all your friends from summer camp again. Registration forms are in the office. Don’t wait!

Hannukiot
Who needs a Hannukia? Doronia offers an aluminium Hannukia for 15€. Candles are 2,30€. Let us know by November 17 so that we can make a group order.

Todah Rabah — Thank You
We thank Irith Raub-Michelsohn for speaking at the demonstration on October 15. We thank our friend, supporter and foundation member Christine Whitelaw and “Netzwerk Bünde” for organizing the visit on October 29 from Temple Sinai, Colorado.
