Happy New Year

We wish all our members and friends
a healthy and happy New Year 5766!

Leschana Tovah Tikatevu — May you be inscribed in
happiness and peace in the Book of Life for the coming year!

Dear friends, members and supporters,
The Jewish New Year begins on Rosh Hashanah and reaches it's climax 10 days later on Yom Kippur. The High Holy Days are days of introspection for Jews the world over. We take a spiritual inventory and approach God with our heartfelt prayers. We pray to be written into the Book of Life in health and happiness for another year. Our prayers concentrate on the three pillars of Teschuva-return (to God), Tefillah-prayer, and Tzedakah-charity. We seek to mend the errors of our past deeds between us and our fellow men and then between us and God.
We will celebrate the High Holy Days together. On Erev Rosh Hashanah we will begin our services at 5:00 p.m. We ask everyone to bring something to share. Please vegetarian dishes only. Challot, wine and juice will be provided by the synagogue. Larissa Dvortsis will pamper us again this year with her delicious, home-made gefillte fish. On Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. we will begin with Shacharit services.

Ten days later, we will hold Yom Kippur services. On Erev Yom Kippur, the haunting melody of Kol Nidre will be heard. The music and prayer will help ready us for the holiest of all days. On Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. we will begin with Shacharit services. At 5:00 p.m. we will come together for Yiskor prayers and then the concluding prayers of the Ne'ila service. At sundown we will break our 24-hour fast with Challah and tea before going home. It is clear that children, the elderly and infirm should not fast.
The High Holy Day services will be led by Rachel Dohme and Volodymr Pesok. Susanne Kessler will read from the Torah. Rebekka Dohme will act as cantor.

Erev Sukkoth On Monday, October 17, Erev Sukkoth, we will all meet either in the synagogue to bake Challot or at our land (Buerenstrasse 1) to erect and decorate the Sukkah. The service begins at 5:00 p.m. We invite all our neighbors and friends to join us for the 4th annual Sukkoth celebration. Simchat Torah Our busy holiday month concludes with Simchat Torah. We will celebrate the holiday together on Tuesday, October 25—Erev Simchat Torah. Congregation members will lead the services on Sukkoth and Simchat Torah.

September Review
It seemed that our congregation was always on the go last month. We invited our sister congregation from Bad Pyrmont to join us on a cultural outing to the Sprengel Museum in Hannover and, together with art historian Inesa Lipovitch, enjoyed a beautiful exhibit of Marc Chagall's works. We also took part in the 2nd annual Festival of Peace on September 11. Our congregation was well represented. Over 300 Hameln citizens listened as Rachel read a prayer for peace, Rebekka beautifully sang Shalom Rav, our littlest ones sang Ein Kelohenu and showed a painting they'd made in religious class, and our synagogue choir sang a short program. Our choir “Shalom” gave another concert in the “House of Religion.” Members Valerij Friedmann, Faina Pelts, Nadja Pesok, Marc Ovsievitch and Uwe Wolandovitsch sang with heart and soul. The evening ended with a Havdallah service.

Jewish Education
Classes have commenced and we ask you to register your children right away. The three groups we offer are: Kinder Kehilla (4–10), B'nei Mitzvah class (11–13), and Young and Jewish Jr. (11–18). We wish to thank the teachers, Rebecca and Orly. We also wish to thank Rudi for the endless hours of work he has put into our new youth center. The room is almost ready and we hope the young people will be able to “move in” during the next weeks. We thank “Aktion Mensch” again for their financial support.

Training
Our members are always interested in intensifying their own Jewish training in order to better serve the congregation. The congregation is happy to support them in this undertaking. Faina Pelts will take part in seminars concerning social work, Rebecca Brueckner will attend a family services seminar in Zurich, and Boris Markhaseev will attend another Israeli dance seminar.

Rabbis
We're thrilled that Rabbi Irit Shillor will lead Friday night services on October 14. She will welcome Evelina officially into our congregation. Although Rabbi Shillor can no longer serve us on a regular basis, we look forward to her occasional visits. Abraham Geiger student rabbi Gabor Lengyel led Friday night services for the first time in September. Every seat was taken and we hope to see everyone again when he leads services this month.

A Party for Evelina
We will welcome Evelina into our congregation on Friday, October 14. Rabbi Irit Shillor will lead services. We hope everyone will come and make the evening special for Evelina.

Synagogue Project
As you all know, Uwe Wolandovitch has put endless hours into the organization of a benefit concert for our synagogue. Tickets for this wonderful evening are available in our office for only 6 Euros. Tickets sold at the door will cost 12 Euros. Help us reach our goal of building a synagogue in Hameln by buying tickets to this concert. Even if you can't come, make a contribution to our project. See New Synagogue and click “Donate”.

New Jewish Newspaper
It's wonderful having a second and independent Jewish newspaper in Germany (the Juedische Allgemeine is put out by the Central Council of Jews of Germany). Journalist Olaf Gloeckner spent a day in our congregation, interviewing members and joining us for Friday night services. We look forward to the article he will write in the next issue of Juedische Zeitung. The Juedische Zeitung offers a 6-month free trial subscription. For more information, e-mail jz@wernermedia.de.

We are pleased to welcome new members Mrs. H. Braun and Mr. J. Judelsons. We are happy to have them in our congregation.

Tree of Life
The High Holy Days are a perfect time to remember and/or honor a loved one or friend. By purchasing a “leaf” for our Tree of Life, you perform 2 Mizvot (good deeds) at once. You honor someone and help raise money for the new synagogue. Click on Tree of Life to order your leaf. New leaves ordered: In honor of Heinz Schmidt's life.

October Birthdays
Happy birthday to all those born in October. Celebrate with us on Friday, October 21, with a birthday Kiddush.

Refuah Schlama — Get Well Wishes
We wish all who are ill at home or in the hospital a speedy and complete recovery. Members wishing a visit from the Bikur Cholim should call Mrs. Berta Friedmann at 05151 13204.

Condolences
We extend our condolences to Mrs. Christina Whitelaw on the passing of her partner, Heinz Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt was one of our Foundation members. May his memory be for a blessing.

Simon Wiesenthal
Star of David     The world is poorer with the death of Simon Wiesenthal. We mourn the death of Simon Wiesenthal, who died in Vienna on September 20. He brought more than 1000 Nazis to justice and dedicated his life to remembrance not revenge. He said,

“When my life is over and I meet up with the victims of the Holocaust,
I shall have the privilege of saying to them, I have never forgotten you.”

Shalom,
     —Your Synagogue Board
